is there a good tutorial on working with existing autoconf scripts?

I am going to do some work on a package that uses autoconf scripts (but 
not automake) and I need to make some changes to the configure.in file.
Is there a good tutorial on how to read & understand them? (I read the 
autoconf manual but that didnt help)
