I understand your grief: the fact that in case of conflict, the
cross-compiling assumption wins.  I agree might not be the best
choice, but we'll spend time on this if there is no way to have
AC_MSG_ERROR accepted, since in that case the point is moot.

I will adjust my patch according to this thread, and repost it.
