At Ralf's suggestion (at least I think it was his), here's the promised patch.
The following will go in the ChangeLog entry:
Remove automake-provided files from version control.
* build-aux/elisp-comp: Remove file.
* build-aux/install-sh: Remove file.
* build-aux/missing: Remove file.
* build-aux/mdate-sh: Remove file.
* build-aux/.gitignore: New file.
