how do we get one of the sample boards? are they available for purchase? im
looking for something to be a little beefier than the soekris 5501 but
hopefully not as expensive as the soekris 6501...

Interesting will be the prizing compared to the Jetway boards.
The Alix/Soekris builds have customized LED control and sensors stuff and are
using not an SMP kernel.
