Should follow the lead of communication from the system (no asterisk). Nice
directly maps to a kernel call of the same name. Nice map to link directly to
the kernel of the same
name....................http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nice_(Unix)

Linux is a robust and stable operating system kernel, but there are
instances where it can panic, be it due to bad hardware or bad software.

Observing log files to make sure you aware of the fact when the system
panics so you can take appropriate steps to correct the problem nice -n

You wrote command that had an impact on the Linux kernel and automatic shutdown
system was:

"I have changed /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to fixed IP
address (there is no DHCP on the LAN segment it has to live on), I've
added netmask, DNS1, DNS2 and gateway, and changed the name from
pbx.local to asterisk1.eu.nice.com; other than that I've left it alone."

/usr/bin/safe_asterisk: line 145: 11917 Segmentation fault (core
dumped) nice -n $PRIORITY ${ASTBINDIR}/asterisk -f ${CLIARGS} ${ASTARGS}
 > /dev/${TTY} 2>&1 < /dev/${TTY}
 Asterisk ended with exit status 139
> Asterisk ended on signal 11.
