That I understand... but this is not a production machine. Loading is not an issue. I'm using icewm.

Actually the issue seems to be more of a "graphics drivers lock interrupts for long amounts of time, causing problems with Asterisk". Not specific to X. A simple VESA Frame Buffer can cause the same problems.
