There are some added complexities, such as udev, SE-Linux, etc. which can require additional study, but these are comparitively minor, and although they add some additional support overhead during the installation phase, they have their uses and can be used to create a better system. If you need support for the distro, you can contact any number of consultants (my business included) and it will generally be supported separately from Asterisk anyway.
In general, you can do some research on how to get SATA drives to work with 2.4 kernels, though it may change how you go about updating your system. I have been very happy with FC3 after the initial learning curve, BTW.I'm not looking to start a distro war, but we just found out that redhat 9 (and FC 1) don't support SATA drives, and apparently FC 3 does.
We are only familiar with red hat and are in a point in time thatWell, if he gets it running, then you have no reason to migrate :-) Some people have had trouble with udev and SE-Linux with various services, so just suggesting that getting the system running is the hardest part.
