Hi, I wouldn't consider it "throwing away" to buy test equipment. We just moved to Asterisk and it has been working well for us.
There is a pretty decent market for used Asterisk equipment, so I would think you can recover most of your costs reselling the equipment on a mailing list or Ebay. It is a good idea to do some testing in advance, especially on a larger deployment.
