Maybe the work being done (been done?) through Google Summer of Code 2009[1] will net some progress in this direction. MiniVM looks like a pretty good idea... but it's got a long way to go. I seriously doubt app_voicemail itself will get any new features, regardless of how many good ideas get thrown around. Just like what happened with AgentCallbackLogin, I think instead of augmenting the incumbent system, Digium will probably replace VoiceMail and VoiceMailMain with an equivalent dialplan solution using MiniVM. It's much more flexible that way.
