How well it works? You can just get a Digium (or Sangoma or whatever) PRI card for Asterisk and take the T1 directly from the PBX, and that would be the simplest and most economical option. Part of Asterisk's capabilities is to interface extensively with a range of TDM hardware and signaling protocols. PRI would be most reasonable, but those systems also support CAS, E&M, however you want to hand it off. The other option - what you are referring to - is a media gateway, and most of those are built to scale to higher purposes than yours in terms of call density and volume, and are a much more expensive and unnecessary option unless something about stringing a T1 to a PC repulses you.
