I have duetifully followed the instructions in the cdr.txt but asterisk still cannot connect to the MS SQL server. I can connect using the ODBC native connector bu asterisk still cannot

Yes you can use MSSQL with the ODBC driver, I have it working for CDR logs, I had to install unixODBC and configure it then use the cdr_odbc.conf file to specify.
