Yeah, I warned you that I couldn't explain it... On my specific Norstar desk phone, I have two 'lines'. There's mine (230) and one just above it that reads 'Line 2'. (On other user's desks it sometimes reads 'Intercom', but I think that was an error on the 'phone-guy's part.) If I'm on the phone and someone else calls me, the little triangle for 'Line 2' starts flashing. I can reach over and press it, which will automatically put the caller on 'Line 1' on hold. Now, both of these lines are '230', but now I get two instances of 230. The Aastra works this way as well.
On the Polycom when someone else calls me I get a call waiting beep. If I want to pick it up, I hit my 'Hold' button and then press the 'Answer' button on the smart menu. The Aastra phone lets me just press the 'L2' button, like the Norstar did. Is this a picky thing? Yes. But my users are change-resisters. I suspect this will go a long way toward an easier adoption of the phone. I don't know that I understand the statement "it just sort of gives you a line when you need it" ?
