I had something happen almost identical to me a few weeks ago. After alot of hair pulling, it turned out it was my own fault. I went to debug a core dump and instead of typing "gdb", I typed "gdm". It was attempting to do something with X and the Gnome Display Manager and kept failing. It repeatedly tried once every 10 seconds and chewed the processor while it was doing it. Once I killed the process, everything was fine. DOH!!!
