We, in the past tried this on a link in Africa. The real problem is not the delay (You forget the most important, which is the latency time on every electronic device on your path), but the changes on the delay depending on the load of the satellite and if is using dynamic allocation or not. Jitter is another non manageable situation. Only static allocation of bandwith are situations on that we can think on do tests.

Using TDM delays are horrid (I remember calls to the US before TAT8 was installed and most calls went via satellite). Geostationary orbit 30K miles (approx), therefore up-leg plus down-leg is 60K miles. Light travels at 186K miles/s, so that's a 1/3 of a second delay in one direction (ignoring any delays through the satelitte to reduce interference etc), so that's 2/3s there and back.
