For this exact scenario, which I am instituting with Polycom 501s, I opted to get the unmanaged switch in each room. I don't see the problem from a net admin's point of view 'cause the only problem that came to mind was the fact that hubs/switches can't be too many levels deep or the far ends can't reach each other. I have just one main gigabit switch, so the number of hops would never be an issue for me.

Or, kludgy though it seems to me, is it realistic to suggest buying an el-cheapo unmanaged gigabit switch for every office? Looks like I could get away with $50 per node...

If it is experimentation with customers and not just that they ran out of stock at that cost, ask your friends to search for that number on amazon and buy low...
