I suspected that.
Libzap (the zapata library) is not maintained. I'm not aware of any
program actually using it (except maybe GNU Bayonee, or maybe just older
versions of it). Both Asterisk and Yate use libpri and open zaptel
channels directly.
I'm not really sure how well it should work.

Hmm... perhaps you have the wrong audio format?
Try listening to the audio with ztmonitor.
(Sorry, no smarter suggestion)
