Just a little more info that may be (but shouldn't be, as this has been
working great for a couple months now and I have not changed *anything* -- no
software installs or updates, hell no asterisk config changes even) in that
time.

Linux 2.4.26 stock kernel, slackware default .config
libtiff 3.5.7 compiled from source
asterisk and spandsp both compiled from source

GCC 3.3.4:
# gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.3.4/specs
Configured with: ../gcc-3.3.4/configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared
--enable-threads=posix --enable-__cxa_atexit --disable-checking --with-gnu-ld
--verbose --target=i486-slackware-linux --host=i486-slackware-linux
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.3.4

CPU is a P3/800, not being overclocked or anything
VIA Apollo MVP3/Pro133x motherboard (82C598 chipset)
