I would have said that the documentation shows syntax that works and upon which
you may rely.
It is fully appropriate for there to be additional syntaxes that work. But
those are ones upon which it would be imprudent to rely.
Therefore avoiding things unless they're shown in the syntax, as you did, seems
like a good approach to me.
