You need high availability so that your Remedy applications is highly available :)  If you only have one web server or one Remedy application server and the one goes down, there goes your availability. You need redundancy and fail-over. Server Group is part of that solution. I wrote a whole presentation on this a few years ago. It is a bit dated. With 8.1 there are a few changes in some of the settings but the concepts are still true -

There is more, database redundancy, power redundancy, the list goes on and on depending on HOW highly available you need and what your budget is. At Unisys we have have a way to do patches and upgrades while keeping the server up. It's all depending on what your business needs are.
