Tim, We use TelAlert for our messaging processes. It's currently on Solaris but I've played with the Windows version. They are virtually the same.
We have used a traditional modem but are switching over to GSM modems. This provides a lot more flexibility with sending messages to some of the service providers. There are some direct dial gateways for service providers but many are turning them off because of the expense or they charge a fee for monthly use. Along the same lines, email interfaces with some providers are being or have been turned off. This is especially true in Asia Pacific as the email interfaces were common spam targets.
