The troublesome field disappeared again, in spite of the fact that its name was now "User-ID." So I decided to start over. I copied the form over to a new one, but still got "USER_X": invalid identifier," when I tried to save a record.
So I started from scratch with a totally new form, and copied the fields over, except for the trouble-maker. It I created from scratch. SO FAR this has worked, but I'm still feeling apprehensive. Thank you, everyone who replied with suggestions and info.
