Mike, Load balancing softwares usually communicate with the port the application is using and if that port offers no response, it knows the service is down. So you do not really need to write any script. It should be availabe in the LB interface.
I haven't had a look at the Cisco interface, but I would start looking there to see what tools are already available within the the box that could monitor that.
