Over Forty Family Members of the ATCS Have Responded to Partner with the Shul in Providing an Armed Security Guard every Shabbat & YomTov! Please Join With Them So We Can Provide the Security our Shul Needs! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Members, In the past few years it has become quite evident that society is changing. While just a short while ago it was hard to believe that Synagogues in Toronto would need security, now it is clear that it is irresponsible for any Jewish or religious institution in North America to not incorporate security measures to protect its members and guests. On that basis, the ATCS Board created a Security Committee to evaluate and institute security measures to safeguard TCS members and guests over Shabbat & Yom Tov. A number of strategies to increase security have been implemented and there are a number of forthcoming initiatives including a secure gate for the southwest fence, security film for the windows, cameras and panic alarms. The Security Team has met with Vaughan Police Services, the UJA Toronto Security Committee, B'nai Brith Security Leadership and private security companies. Based on professional feedback and the personal positions of many, the acquisition of an off duty armed police constable during religious services on Shabbat and Yom Tov is a reasonable though costly requirement to ensure the security that our community requires. To date, the TCS has been able to finance the various security updates and improvements through the Shul's budget, fundraising and an extremely modest government grant. The Board and the security committee have worked diligently to improve security without any direct cost to the membership. However, this will be forced to change if the TCS retains the services of an armed constable. The cost of an off-duty armed Police Constable (on Shabbat & holidays) over the course of a year will exceed tens of thousands of dollars. On this basis, the Board turns to you, our membership, to invest in the next level of security by contributing, annually, a tax receiptable $200 per member unit (couple or family) and $100 per single member, for police services. The TCS cannot afford to take this next step without the universal participation of its congregants. This is a one-time cost we would levy annually to ensure we have the necessary funds to commit to an annual armed presence outside our Shul. This decision is an important one and, in this particular case, member financial commitments will determine whether the TCS can concretize this new strategy or not.
