It also isn't clear to me what "unity" means in the context of this May 1 
event. My union is one of the endorsees for the May 1 rally and march in NYC 
that begins at Union Square, and I will be there. But I'm looking right now at 
the flyer for the event, and it's as vague as it could be. There are no demands 
at all. The only slogans on the flyer are "We are the 99%" and "Legalize, 
Unionize, Organize." It also promises that "We will fight for the rights of all 
immigrants, all workers, all people," without one specific on how to do that.

I know people who went to the planning meeting and argued that there should be 
an anti-war aspect to the event (to the flyer, to the speeches), but the 
leadership refused. Others argued for a clear anti-racist message, given the 
NYPD's massive stop-and-frisk policy targeting minority communities, as well as 
the police killing of Ramarley Graham in the Bronx. Once again, no success. So 
I'm wondering what we're uniting around.
