I needed the power of a [1]sparse file:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=foo bs=1 count=1 seek=30G
(...)
# losetup /dev/loop0 foo
# mkfs.ext2 -O sparse_super /dev/loop0
(...)
Works pretty well.
