Well, there are people using KDE, but not everyone uses S/MIME certificates. KDE is a very big system and it depends (I'm taking about runtime-dependencies, even though there are plenty compile dependencies also) on many applications. You might get more information about your specific error and what Kmail actually expects on the kdepim maillist. There might be something missing from your installation. I do not think that there are so many people (using S/MIME certificates) AND (using Kmail) AND (using Archlinux) AND (reading the maillist) so that you could find your answer around here fast.
