I tried it again, this time booting from grub directly to runlevel 1 but the same happened. Now I'm forced to use the standard nv driver in xorg.conf.

Did you solve this problem somehow? Thanks
I fixed this problem by installing kernel26mm and reinstalling nvidia.

there must be something wrong with this build of the kernel.

A bit OT
Some time ago I installed a PC with a nvidia card.
At first I used the standard 2.6 kernel but due to a bug in alsa driver that does not allow me to use the mixer in non root user I switched to 2.6mm I reinstalled/recompiled the nvidia driver with the 2.6mm and I started the x server, but once I rebooted the computer the driver "got lost" in the sense that it does not start anymore and I had to recompile again. Actually I do not remeber exactly the xorg messages. Basically each time I rebooted I had to reinstall/recompile the nvidia driver.
How did you get it running under 2.6mm?
