My temporary band-aid solution was to install xfce4-power-manager which has a slider in the status icon menu, so now I can set it (not really a feature I want or need, but has some utility) or just check it from there. It works for now. I'm still looking. It also allowed me to remove the power manager I had installed, and wound up using marginally less space, with fewer dependencies.
