Since you're already using a ${foo/bar/baz} bashism, that's a useless
use of cat:
        devnum=$(< /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/dev)

And the subshell is also unnecesary:
        read -r devnum < /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/dev

The second one is posix...
