Thanks Pierre. I use dovecot. The message reloading/sorting that is slow is 
mail stored locally from a pop3 server so the filtering is all done from 
~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. It's like kde4 has slowed down. My 2 imap accounts 
are fine. I'll keep an eye on it.
