I've get a similar issue some time ago with konqueror. No text was displayed in text area when I was tipping, but the text come back magically when I select it.
I have change the font, and every thing come back right. I think that it's a "font of the color of the background" issue. You should have change the font, or the font's color when playing with theme. This will have make the problem disappear.
