thanks for the suggestions. After lots of fruitless experimentation another
developer around here pointed out that the Java VM we were using (GemStoneJ
4.1.1) had a copy of xerces.jar on its boot classpath.  This version was an
older one (1.0.3) that did not support DOM level 2.  Since it was the first one
loaded, we got the failures.
