I prefer HAPI over express, but there are already solutions for both REST 
as well graphQL available to both. Yes, graphQL is safe for in the browser. 
 (as far as safe goes inside a browser) You have to google around, and read 
in a bit on each solution to see what's the best solution for you.
You might want to check out the Apollo stack <http://dev.apollodata.com/> for 
a more ready to run approach. They have even an angualr2 interface ready to 
run.
