it was a silly syntax error that someone answered on Stack Overflow - the
escape characters should have worked, except i was missing a closing
bracket for my ng-class:
template: '<div class="col-xs-12" ng-class="{\'my-border\': hasBorder">
...</div>'
The solution:
template: '<div class="col-xs-12" ng-class="{\'my-border\': hasBorder"}>
...</div>'
