$resource is Angular's built-in way of handling RESTful end-points. https://github.com/mgonto/restangular is another popular option that has a bit more functionality over $resource but is not too complex. http://www.breezejs.com/ is another options that has a lot of feature but it definitely more complex.
If you willing to work with a library that is still early in development (IE. APIs and such are still not guarenteed to be stable) I have been developing this : https://github.com/nucleus-angular/rest : which is aimed at the functionality/complexity of something between Restangular and BreezeJS.
