Hi David, I only took a quick look at ember, so I have no experience there! Nevertheless I think it is entirely possible what you want to do. As long as you make sure your directive is completely self-contained, it should be to ember no different than any other html-tag. so, as long as you don't rely on available scopes you should be fine!
