Thanks for your reply, you were absolutely right that the class rather than the filename was required.
I was mislead by the fact that C-x <space> in emacs, which is normally used to set breakpoints, was getting the same error. So, as convenient as that feature is in gdb, if it doesn't work it's not so convenient. But your suggestion gives me a viable workaround - thanks so much !
