Hi, Eclipse is not the fastest IDE and if you run on a smaller machine it might take a while to get started. How much memory do you have?
Of course there is no need to run Eclipse if you only want to use the emulator. If you go to the tools folder you should be able to start the emulator. Look at the instruction how to create an AVD file and run emulator with AVD file (http://developer.android.com/guide/ developing/tools/avd.html).
