I wasn't able to find a good, free Java steganography library that can survive recompression. I think I'll just store the data on the SD card. It's not as nice as having it associated with the contact in the contacts db, as the user can delete the database, swap SD cards or buy a new phone and the stuff won't work any more. But I don't see other options.
