What are the options for device management eg OMA-DM style of management on a fleet of handsets? I have a field service engineer application that was originally chalked up to go into WM6 but some delays and the a change in mobile phone provider have presented an interesting option in Android.
BUT I have an uphill struggle with convincing the support team that Android isn't a toy and we could have 400+ devices being used without all the device management bit in place. I can see the huge potential of the OS and what could be done but apart from funambol (which only serves the PIM data via an a la mobile update) server I can't find much in the way of management software to handle this number of devices. I've found several providers redbend being one and some others but they sell software directly to the likes of t-mobile. If we have to, my team are willing to start building a device management systems because every one of my developers that have tried it are VERY excited about the opportunities. Does Android allow for the standard device management features such as: # Device configuration # Device setup # Device monitoring # Software provisioning # Phone lock-down # Phone erasure # Battery drain # Phone disabling (Taken from:http://funambol.com/solutions/devicemanagement.php) We can engineer the app to be self updating, but what about the rest? Will the OS allow to remotely kill the app if we know the device has been stolen? Any ideas or resources you could point me towards would be very much appreciated as I'm very keen to explore the potential corporate applications of Android and not have to grind down the WM6 + Anti- Virus + Windows Cal usual solution.
