I think you've missed a key factor in what may affect sales; - There is a huge momentum for free-applications and pay-for applications are a new concept.
I see things at the moment as being similar to the Unix/Linux market place. I know many good Unix sysadmins who would rather spend hours or days seaching out a piece of free software (or writing it themselves) as opposed to paying even $20 for a commercial offering, and Android seems to be in the same boat. I'm sure there are many people who will try every single free twitter client before they'd even consider paying 99 cents for one. I don't know how this will play out over time, we may end up with an iPhone like market where paid-apps are common, we may end up with a Linux environment where people will still hack their code or "make-do" with a free piece of software.
