I'm not quite clear on why one would be concerned about performance on presenting a crossword page? Even if it took a couple seconds I don't think users would be disappointed. It's like psychologically it's thinking and doing something. Devices though are getting faster and faster. Even when I did my first Android app in 2009 I put up a progress bar while it was doing a lot of calculations. You could see the bar on an emulator but it was a quick flash on an actual device.
