On a Marshmallow phone, I set Priority mode and chose 'Priority only allows Messages From starred contacts only' (see https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6111295?hl=en). My app's notification for an incoming message from a phone number contact is still notifying. Do I need to do anything to let the system know whether the message is from a starred contact or not?
