After I posted this question I found a reference to using Messenger that seemed to indicate it was about as lightweight as Binder, being just a wrapper for it. And I have a nice example of using Messenger for 2-way communication here on Stack Overflow <http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4300291/example-communication-between-activity-and-service-using-messaging>. So I think that is what I will settle on.
