the workaround i found is to put the call to mViewPager.setCurrentItem(0) 
in the onPageSelected 
in a way like this:

if(isOrientationChanged){

mViewPager.setCurrentItem(0, false);

Log.d(TAG, "onPageSelectedGoto: "+ mViewPager.getCurrentItem());

position = 0;

}
