You would have to ask the developers of those apps. I would assume they
either A) use an existing API for locating specific places or B) maintain
their own database of locations that their app queries.

Not that I'm aware of. You're going to be hard-pressed to find tutorials or
ready-made-code that does exactly what you want. I would start with looking
up the Places API and seeing if that can get you the data you want, then
work up from there.
