That's a bit funny:

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/Environment.html#getExternalStorageDirectory()
 
returns a File and

http://developer.android.com/reference/java/io/File.html#getAbsolutePath() 
returns a String

Did you mean:
File root = new 
File(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().getAbsolutePath()); 

?
