I believe that there is a maximum file size limit of 2Gb, but this has more to do with Android in general than specifically with SQLite. Performance has more to do with your database schema than with the size of the file, but Android was not designed as a "database engine" and I had to resort to some tricks -- such as record caching -- in my app to achieve reasonable performance.
