I uploaded another .apk to the web site and clicking on the apk link appeared to download but it didn't install. Looking around a bit I found awesomedrop on Android market. After installing it on the Droid x2, I activated it on the Android and then went to their web site at labs.dashwire.com . It created a key for me to enter into the android app. I then dragged the apk file that wouldn't install from the web link to the browser window and PC/Android combo proceeded to download and install the .apk file correctly. The answer at least on the Droid x2 is: you need some sort of app to do the installing for .apks not on Android Market even if "unknown sources" is checked. I didn't bother with anything for the G1 as it knows how to install .apks no matter where they are from.
