I installed Pointer Location.  I guess I have some bad news.  Pointer
Location showed that my touch screen was _extremely_ responsive.  It
was picking up absolutely every touch I gave it.  This means the
hardware looks solid.  But I also think it necessarily means that
something in the Android View code is swallowing, or otherwise
ignoring touches in certain situations.  The problem appears to be
software based, and it's happening in nearly every application I use
on Android.
